I learned the bowline on a fishing boat when I was eleven, from a deckhand who tied it with his eyes closed and told me I'd know I had it when my hands stopped thinking about it.
He was right. A knot isn't a sequence you remember — it's a shape your fingers learn, the way a guitarist's fingers learn a chord. You tie it wrong a hundred times, and then one day it's just there.
