Clove hitch

What it is

The clove hitch is two half hitches in opposite directions around a post or rail. It's not the strongest hitch, but it's the fastest to tie and adjust — which is why it's everywhere on a boat.

How to tie it

1.  pass the working end around the post
2.  cross over itself to make an X
3.  wrap again, tucking the end under the second crossing
4.  snug both turns — done

When to use it

Fenders, lashing to a rail, temporary lines, and starting a lashing. Don't trust it alone under a varying load — back it up with a half hitch.
