How to read a rope before you load it

Halldór S. · Aug 29, 2026 · 5 min read

Rope fails quietly. There's no warning pop, no groan — just a flat spot, a glaze, a fuzz, and then nothing. So you learn to read it with your hands.

Run the meter

Every few months, run the whole rope through a loose fist. Your palm finds lumps, flat spots, and stiffness long before your eyes do.

Retire early

A rope is cheap. A fall is not. If you feel a flat spot, or a burn glaze, or a kink that won't relax — cut it, whip the new end, and move on.
